Mignon Sandwich with Caramelized Onions

A Gourmet Indulgence

Introduction

A Mignon Sandwich with Caramelized Onions is a luxurious take on a classic sandwich, combining tender filet mignon, sweet caramelized onions, and creamy melted cheeses in a crispy baguette. This recipe is perfect for an elevated lunch or a cozy dinner, delivering a balance of smoky, savory, and slightly sweet flavors in every bite.

Ingredients

  • For the Steak:
    • 8 oz (225g) filet mignon
    • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
    • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • For the Caramelized Onions:
    • 1 tbsp olive oil
    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 3 onions, thinly sliced
    • 1 tbsp water (if needed)
  • For the Sandwich Assembly:
    • 1 baguette
    • 1/2 cup (50g) shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 2 oz (60g) Brie cheese, sliced
    • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
    • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
    • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak:
    • Rub the filet mignon with Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, and salt.
    • Heat a skillet over high heat, add olive oil, and sear the steak on all sides for about 2 minutes per side.
    • Transfer to a preheated oven at 320°F (160°C) and cook for 15 minutes. Let it rest before slicing thinly.
  2. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a pan, melt butter with olive oil over medium-low heat.
    • Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, for 25-30 minutes. If the onions stick to the pan, add a splash of water to deglaze.
    • Once golden brown and soft, remove from heat.
  3. Toast the Baguette:
    • Cut the baguette in half and sprinkle both sides with mozzarella cheese.
    • Toast in an air fryer or oven until the cheese melts and the bread turns crispy.
  4. Assemble the Sandwich:
    • In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise with Dijon mustard to make a creamy spread.
    • Spread the mustard-mayo on the toasted baguette, then layer with thinly sliced filet mignon, caramelized onions, and slices of Brie cheese.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.

Tips for Success

  • Use High-Quality Steak: Filet mignon provides the most tender texture.
  • Slow-Caramelize the Onions: Patience is key to achieving deep, sweet flavor.
  • Customize the Cheese: Try swapping Brie for Gouda or Camembert for a different taste.

Why This Recipe Works

This sandwich balances richness and texture, combining juicy filet mignon, gooey cheese, and crispy bread. The caramelized onions add a subtle sweetness that enhances the overall depth of flavor, making this a truly indulgent bite.
